Newtown, the largest town in Powys, sits beautifully on the banks of the River Severn in Mid Wales. It blends a rich industrial heritage with scenic natural landscapes and a vibrant arts scene, making it a fantastic hub for tourists exploring the region.
The Robert Owen Museum: Newtown is the birthplace of Robert Owen (1771–1858), the famous social reformer and pioneer of the cooperative movement. This town-centre museum explores his global legacy in workers' rights and education.
Newtown Textile Museum: Housed in an authentic, restored 19th-century handloom weaver's cottage, this museum brings the town’s booming woollen and textile past to life with working looms and interactive displays
Pryce Pryce-Jones Legacy: The town is famous for being the home of the world's first mail-order business, started here in the Victorian era, which laid early roots for global fashion giants like Laura Ashley who later operated nearby.
The River Severn & Dolerw Park: The pristine River Severn runs right through the town. Adjacent to the town centre is Dolerw Park, a spacious, green open haven ideal for picnics, relaxed strolls, and spotting local wildlife like red kites.
The Montgomery Canal & Severn Way: The famous long-distance Severn Way walking path passes straight through Newtown. Visitors can also walk or cycle along the peaceful towpaths of the nearby Montgomery Canal.
Walking Newtown Trails: The town has highly active, mapped-out community walking loops that take you directly from the town centre into the rolling green hills and surrounding woodlands.
Oriel Davies Gallery: One of Wales' leading contemporary art galleries, located right next to the parkland. It features regularly changing exhibitions from national and international artists, a lovely craft shop, and a café.
Theatr Hafren: A professional-standard theatre hosting a diverse schedule of live music, touring theatre productions, dance, and stand-up comedy.
Newtown Food Festival: If visiting in September, this massive annual event fills the town with food stalls, live music, and culinary demonstrations highlighting local Mid Wales produce.
Gregynog Hall & Gardens: Located just a few miles away, a historic grand estate boasting 750 acres of magnificent woodlands, formal gardens, and regular cultural events.
Castell Dolforwyn: The atmospheric ruins of a medieval Welsh fortress perched on a ridge just a short drive down the valley, offering panoramic views of the Severn landscape.
Newtown Park Run: Hosted at Dolerw Park at 9:00am every Saturday, this 5km all terrain run will kick start your weekend. Don't forget to register online beforehand!
